Can wisdom teeth be removed using just a local anesthetic ?
I will be having only two removed.
But the oral surgeon said nothing about using a general anesthetic or anything similar.
I assume therefore it will be done the same way any other teeth are extracted.
Anybody else had wisdom’s extracted using just a local? What was the experience like?

Yes they can.
I’ve had two wisdom teeth extracted in the chair with a local. The worst thing is the needle. But they will give you a numbing gel before they inject the anesthetic so you really don’t feel much at all!
You will feel a pulling sensation and hear a few cracks. It might be intense at the time but try and stay calm and be brave. It will be over in no time at all!
Also, the dental nurse might hold your hand if you are feeling stressed. This helped me alot.
well i will prefer you not to remove them as my brother who is a dentist told me that removing wisdom tooth will effect your eyesight.
I just had mine taken out yesterday… I think most people have only local, because there are more risks if you do general. Anyhow, you don’t feel much, except the pressure, and maybe the first shot. If it hurts, they will give you more anesthetic.
I tried to imagine I was somewhere else. Or concentrate on a song or something. Bringing something to squeeze (like those ‘stress balls’ filled with rice/flour) is REALLY helpful.
They told me it could last a hour at the most, but I only stayed 20 min or so, and mine haven’t even started growing yet. Oh, and eat before. You really don’t want to be hungry afterwards. Have ice packs and soft food/juice ready too… ><'
Having all four wisdom teeth taken out with just local anesthetic!?
Having all 4 of the wisdom teeth taken out with just local anesthetic. I’m very nervous about this. 2 of the teeth are impacted and i have heard from some people you should be put to sleep for this.I have talked to my oral surgeon and he said that they only give local anesthetic I’m i a pretty big baby when it comes pain and the dentist. Can anyone tell me if they have had the same thing and there experience. Do you feel pain or do you just feel pulling. Please HELP!
Thanks for all of the help! Greatly appreciated!

Hey me and my brother had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out at once, without being put to sleep. It is scary knowing your going to be awake, but they freeze your entire mouth so you don’t feel anything. The only part I really didn’t like about not being put to sleep was that you can hear them grabbing our tooth and it cracking and what not, as well you can smell the blood. So if you don’t think those two things will bother you I think you will be fine. Goodluck!
All four of mine were impacted, I only had a local. The only thing you should worry about is the corners of your mouth which, if not moist, can crack like chapped lips. I strongly recommend getting some of that chapstick that you dip your finger in.
All you feel is the strange sensation of a pop. Kind of like if you had a suction cup in your mouth. It is over faster than you would think. Don’t worry if a problem developed (like if one of them couldn’t come out with just pulling) they would either schedule another appointment to put you under or on better anesthetics or just knock you out then.
People forget that going under for any medical procedure has a serious element to it. It can be dangerous, you should be proud of your doctor for not just resorting to this but trying to do it the right way first.
You will be fine!! and the pain meds after will be fun…expect to drool!
I think there is a huge spectrum about what is done with wisdom teeth. Some dentists do it, some send to oral surgeons. Some use local anesthesia others use general anesthesia. I had all four wisdom teeth taken out. All impacted. I don’t remember them even giving me an option of using local. It was assumed I would go completely under. I would recommend going completely under. Its a really uncomfortable procedure. The teeth are in the back of the mouth so your jaw has to be completely open. Also impacted teeth involve cutting and removing skin and stitches. I would recommend finding an oral surgeon who will administer general anesthesia. Even if you are still planning on using local anesthesia its a good idea to have a surgeon who will administer general anesthesia because if the surgery doesn’t go well its good to have the option of being put under mid surgery.
Good luck!
Suggestion: If you do decide to go completely under, make sure you schedule the surgery for early in the morning. If you do get general anesthesia (and maybe local I’m not sure) you can’t eat after 11PM the night before. Its not fun worrying about the surgery all morning and be starving.
i just had two out using local only and will have the other two out again only with local in a few months. you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. mine were both impacted, and the most i felt was pressure, and even then it was only on the top one. you will feel them threading the stitches through your gums, but it does not hurt at all. if for whatever reason you feel anything while the surgeon is working, alert him by a hand signal or by making a noise, and he will inject more local anesthetic. there is really no need to go to sleep for this surgery, especially if your teeth are not impacted in a complicated way. (mine were straight and not too far under the gumline.)
Having a wisdom teeth removed with local anesthetic? Have you had the same experience? Please share it with me
hehehe..also…I know it’s like the 3rd time I’ve asked this question…but the date is getting closer and I’m getting nervous.

yep! I had 2 out. I had a panic attack in the waiting room for the first one cause i was so scared..lol..They booth took a long time to pull out, but it didnt hurt. you feel a lot of pressure, but no pain. If you do feel any pain just ask the dentist to give you more novacaine.you’ll be fine!
I had this done once and it was pure hell. The novacaine was not strong enougb. It’s because the wisdom tooth was impacted. I have a very high tolerance for pain, but when it came to extracting this impacted wisdom tooth that all went out the window.
The next extraction I had, I made sure I was put to sleep.
Yep, i had 2 of my bottom teeth taken out and it was hell. The area was totally numb – didn’t feel a thing but you can see and hear everything happening. I wore goggles and fragments of my teeth were flying everywhere. You can see the torch thing that they use.
If i could go back in time, I’d choose to go to sleep. I was kind of traumatized after that experience. Just letting you know.
My 16 yr old son had one removed Tuesday (4 days ago) under a local anesthetic. I was reluctant to have him sedated because he had a difficult experience with sedation when he was younger. He was very scared in the waiting room, but even during the procedure he admitted it wasn’t too bad. He says the worst part was the pressure on his jaw/lips from the dentist prying the tooth out, and that while it was uncomfortable it was not painful. He was completely numb for a few hours afterwards and took ibuprofen and half vicodins for 2 days, then ibuprofen alone for 2 days. Stayed home Wednesday eating soft foods and started a new job on Thursday. He now says that he’ll do the other three the same way when they need removed. He actually enjoyed getting to talk to the dentist during the procedure and see the tooth when it came out – even kept it.
One other thing – he now has a high fever. DDS said this can be a VERY dangerous infection and called in antibiotics for him. If you experience these symptoms and/or sore throat, difficulty swallowing or severe swelling, call your dentist immediately.
Good luck. Try not to worry.
Hi, I had 7 teeth removed a week ago, in preparation for getting braces. Four of those teeth were impacted wisdom teeth. I chose to have them out with local anaesthetic, but i was also sedated.
It was only an extra $ 200, and worth every penny. I remember being awake and aware of what was going on around me, but i dont remember any pain or anything negative. I just remember listening to the dentist and the nurses talking about their weekends, every so often they’d ask me to open my mouth wider and then it was all over. I would really recommend it. I didnt want to have a general anasthetic, so this was the best option for me….and im petrified of dentists.
The weeks leading up to having my teeth removed, every one had an opinion to share with me…usually telling me i was crazy not to get ‘knocked out’ or whatever. My advice is to ignore everyone elses opinions! It is normal to be nervous, but try to have a positive attitude and think about how good it will be to have out those pesky wisdom teeth!
Good luck
